German European School Singapore (GESS) was founded in 1971 with just six students and has grown into one of the largest German schools abroad in Asia, with around 1,800 students from more than 70 nationalities. It is a not-for-profit school, and since 2018 it has been based on a single purpose-built campus at Dairy Farm Lane, near Bukit Panjang in the west of Singapore.
GESS runs two parallel pathways. The international stream teaches the International Baccalaureate in English through the Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma Programmes, with German taught as a second language from Grade 1 to 10 and mother-tongue programmes in Danish and Dutch. The German stream follows the German International Curriculum and awards German school-leaving certificates, including the Abitur, and its fees are subsidised by the German government. A bilingual preschool takes children from 18 months, taught in English or German.
The school is an IB World School and is accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and ACS WASC, and holds the "Excellent German School Abroad" quality seal. The campus includes STEM labs, an Olympic-sized pool, arts and music spaces and extensive green outdoor areas. GESS is a day school with no boarding and does not currently offer scholarships. For 2026/27, tuition runs from about S$28,900 in Grades 1–4 of the German stream to about S$44,000 in the IB Diploma years, plus a development levy of about S$6,100 a year (halved from the second year).
