The International School of Penang (Uplands)

The International School of Penang (Uplands), still widely known simply as Uplands, was founded in 1955 and is one of the oldest international schools in Malaysia. Since 2006 it has occupied a purpose-built campus on Jalan Sungai Satu in Batu Ferringhi, on the north coast of Penang Island and about 11 km from George Town.

Uplands describes itself as the first multi-programme IB World School in Malaysia. Younger pupils follow the IB Primary Years Programme, the school has recently added the IB Middle Years Programme, older students take IGCSE examinations, and the senior years lead to the IB Diploma. Students are aged from 4 to 18, and German, French, Mandarin and Malay are taught alongside English, with ESL support for newcomers. The school is a member of FOBISIA.

The student body of around 600 is drawn largely from Penang's international community, including families working in the island's semiconductor and electronics industries, and the school has historically offered boarding for older students.
