Pelangi School was founded in 2006 by two American educators married to Indonesians, who wanted a bilingual school for mixed-heritage children in Ubud. It opened with 12 students and now has just over 200 from more than 25 countries. Since 2013 it has occupied a single natural campus in Banjar Kumbuh, Mas, about ten minutes from Ubud, with class gardens, several playgrounds and a wildlife corridor under the trees.
Children start in Tiny Tots at two and continue through playgroup and kindergarten into Primary (Classes 1–6) and Middle School (Classes 7–8). Teaching is bilingual in English and Bahasa Indonesia. Primary uses the International Primary Curriculum and Pearson Edexcel, combined with the Indonesian national curriculum, and the school says this prepares students for IB, Cambridge or IGCSE programmes. Arts, yoga, sport and environmental studies are part of the week.
Pelangi is not-for-profit, and around a quarter of students receive full or partial scholarships. The school day runs 8:30am to 3pm, with about 25 after-school activities. Published 2026–27 fees run from about IDR 119 million to IDR 127 million a year in primary and middle school, plus a one-time enrolment fee.
