RIS Swiss Section – Deutschsprachige Schule Bangkok was founded in 1963 by a Swiss teacher couple, so that the children of Swiss expatriates could return easily to Swiss schools. In 1982 it became a section of Ruamrudee International School (RIS) to meet Thai licensing rules, and it has shared the RIS campus ever since. The campus is at Ramkhamhaeng 184 in Min Buri, in eastern Bangkok. The governments of Switzerland and Germany both recognise and subsidise it as an official school abroad, and the canton of Lucerne is its Swiss sponsor canton.
The school takes children from preschool (age 2) to Grade 12 and teaches mainly in German, combining the Swiss and German curricula. From Grade 7, secondary students follow one of three German-system tracks (Gymnasium, Realschule or Hauptschule), and the upper school leads to a bilingual Swiss Matura. English, Thai and French or Spanish are also taught. Language-support programmes are offered for children who do not yet speak German. The school is small, with roughly 300 students from Swiss, German, Austrian and other families.
Students use the full RIS campus. This includes 50-metre and 25-metre pools, several football pitches, tennis and squash courts, two air-conditioned sports halls, an auditorium and a library. RIS boarding is available for older students. Tuition is charged per semester. Grades 7–10 cost THB 335,000 a semester (about THB 670,000 a year) and Grades 11–12 cost THB 355,000. A one-time entrance fee of THB 165,000 also applies, plus either a refundable THB 200,000 campus development deposit or a per-semester registration fee.
